Riggs Andrew Nelson was born on August 24, 1940, in Bellingham, Washington, and passed away on January 8, 2026, while living near his family in Richland, Washington.
Riggs was a longtime local business owner and the proprietor of Ace Beverage, where he was well known and highly respected throughout the community. He was married for 59 years to his high school sweetheart, Gay (Jacobs) Nelson, who preceded him in death in 2021
An avid boater and private pilot, Riggs had a lifelong love of adventure and the outdoors. Whether on the water, in the air, in the office, or in the band room he was highly driven and always strove to be the best at everything he did. Above all else, Riggs was devoted to his family and took great pride in his roles as a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was also a proud Washington State University Athletics supporter and shared his Cougar spirit with family and friends.
Riggs is survived by his children: daughter Roxi Nelson (Marc Smith) of Park City, Utah; and son Kent Nelson and his wife, Monaca, of Richland, Washington. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jordyn (Aaron), Larkyn (Nick), Kanyen (Becky), and Marinn Nelson. In addition, he is survived by his three younger brothers, Mark, Ward (Kylie), and Greg (Diane), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish his memory.
Riggs was deeply involved in his community throughout his life. He served with the Mt. Baker Volunteer Ski Patrol and the National Ski Patrol and was active in the Bellingham Jaycees and Lion’s club, Bellingham Business Club, Elks Lodge, Bellingham Yacht Club, and STRATO Hangar Association. He was also active with the Washington State and National Beverage Wholesalers Association, where he was engaged in political and legislative efforts affecting his industry. A proud member of the American Legion, Riggs served as an honorary color guard member and played Taps at veterans’ services for more than 60 years. He was also a dedicated volunteer instructor and supporter of the Mt. Baker High School Band, generously giving his time to support youth and music education.
Riggs will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit, unwavering service to others, deep love of family, and enduring passion for life on the water and in the air.
A graveside service will be held on January 31, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. at Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale, Washington. A celebration of life will be held later this year.
