Marylyn June Mitchell was born December 2, 1939, in Compton, California to Maxine and Kenneth Davis. She grew up in Norwalk, CA, and graduated from Excelsior High School in June of 1957. Later that year, she married her high school sweetheart, Henry Mitchell, whom she had known since 7th grade. Together, they had three children. Marylyn was a loving stay-at-home mom until she went back to school in 1976 to get her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. She graduated magna cum laude from Cal Poly Pomona. She was the coordinator for the adult foods and nutrition program in Anaheim, and taught many classes as part of the program, including their first class on how to use the microwave.
They moved to Phoenix in the 90s for 5 years, and it was here that Marylyn’s love for crafting and quilting blossomed. They then moved to Everson, WA, when Henry retired in 1996. They spent much of their time in retirement going on cruises all over the world. When they weren’t travelling, you could often find Marylyn hand-making cards (including their Christmas cards every year), sewing quilts (she completed over 30), and cooking for numerous family gatherings. Marylyn was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013. She did not let the diagnosis define her, and continued cooking, crafting, travelling, and caring for her family for as long as she could. She passed on April 19, 2026, at home, surrounded by family.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Henry, her children, Kenneth (Laurie), Stephen (Kim), and Kathleen (Michael), her grandchildren, Erik (Michael), Jennifer, Jacob, Jerilyn (Tyler), Faith (David), Alexander (Sable), and Grace, and her great-grandchildren, Lili and Link.
Marylyn was known for her creativity, resilience, and love for her family. She was constantly going above and beyond for the people she loved. Her handmade cards are treasured by those fortunate enough to have received them. Her home was always warm and welcoming. Her love for Henry never faded, and she made a huge impact on the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Marylyn's Life will be held on May 28th at 1:00 at Cornwall Church (in the Loft), 4518 Northwest Dr., Bellingham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bellingham Theatre Guild.
